Impotency awareness month

National Impotency Awareness Month

What is Impotence?

Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection for satisfying sexual activity. ED is fairly common, affecting about 50% of men.

As men age, they are more at risk for developing impotence.

There are different levels of ED, ranging from not being able to maintain an erection to orgasm to not having an erection for years.

What is Impotency Awareness Month?

November is National Impotency Awareness Month. Impotence can be embarrassing for men, but like mentioned above, it’s common, especially above the age of 50.

The purpose of bringing awareness to ED is to get rid of the stigma and encourage men to seek medical help. Don’t let embarrassment be the reason that you don’t seek the treatment you need.

What are the Causes of Impotence?

Impotence can be caused by a variety of physical, as well as psychological factors.

Not sure if your symptoms qualify for treatment? Take the quiz to see if you could benefit from therapy.

Physical Factors

Vascular disease is the most common cause of impotence. Erections occur when blood collects in the shaft of the penis. Vascular disease may limit the blood flow to the penis, therefore restricting the ability to become erect.

Nerve damage can also affect a man’s ability to maintain an erection. Nerves can be damaged by diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostate surgery, or spinal cord injury.

Peyronie’s Disease, or the non-cancerous condition that results from fibrous scar tissue in the penis, can cause curved, painful erections.

Imbalanced hormones, like Testosterone, can interfere with erections and sex drive.

Other Physical Causes

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Alcohol or tobacco use
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Radiation therapy to the testicles
  • Parkinson’s Disease

Psychological Factors

Mental health and physical health are closely related. Erectile dysfunction and mental health can lead to a vicious cycle that may seem never-ending.

Depression, anxiety, stress, and guilt can cause sexual issues, then those sexual issues can worsen mental health.

How Can I Prevent Impotence?

Diet

Blood flow is needed for a penis to become erect, therefore heart-healthy foods can prevent impotence. Studies have shown that impotence is uncommon in men who eat a Mediterranean diet, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, heart-healthy fats, and red wine.

Exercise

Maintaining a healthy weight and aerobic exercise are also important to avoid ED. Sedentary lifestyles are strongly linked to impotence.

Reduce Stress

Easing stress and tension can help prevent the onset of ED. Stress can boost cortisol levels, which constrict blood vessels in the penis. Over time, chronically high cortisol can decrease the amount of testosterone your body makes.

Quit Smoking and Drinking

Studies show that long-term erectile dysfunction has been connected to chronic heavy alcohol use. Heavy drinking can cause liver damage, nerve damage, or interference with hormone levels.

Drinking in moderation or not at all is recommended to maintain erectile function.

For men under 40 years old, smoking is the largest cause of ED. Smoking cigarettes affects the lining of your blood vessels and the way they function – causing impotence.

Quit smoking to reverse some negative side effects.

When to See a Doctor

If you have diabetes, heart disease, or other known health conditions and experience impotence, schedule a consultation with a provider.

Other sexual problems, like premature or delayed ejaculation, may also be a reason to contact a provider

TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy)

Low testosterone levels can cause impotence or make it worse. Through a blood test, your testosterone levels will determine whether TRT is the correct treatment for you.

TRT can be delivered in several different ways — via injection, oral medication, patches, and creams.

At Limitless, we administer TRT through injections. This method allows us to track and monitor your treatment and results better than other administration methods.

Shockwave Therapy

LimitlessPulse™ is a painless and non-evasive procedure that sends shockwaves into the penile tissue. The shockwaves prompt the body to repair damaged blood vessels in the penis.

Platelet-Rich-Plasma Therapy

Your blood contains platelets that promote healing and recovery from injury. LimitlessResurrect™ takes platelet-rich blood and injects it into the penis. The platelet-rich plasma promotes a healing response that revitalizes the penis.
